This is the obituary of my 2nd great grandfather, John Franklin Ross. Unfortunately there is no publication information on the source document. It was likely written by his family and published in the Rockwell City or Lake City newspaper near his home in Iowa, in the days following December 13, 1934.
John Franklin Ross
John Franklin Ross, son of Henry and Elizabeth Ross, was born August 2, 1859, at Mahomet, Ill. His boyhood and young manhood were spent near the place of his birth.
March 27, 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Stotler, at Mansfield, Ill. To this union seven children were born: George, Mason, Mary, Clara, John, Helen and Oliver.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross came to Iowa in 1890. They first settled in Audubon county for one year. The next year they moved to their present home place, northeast of Lake City. These were earlier [d]ays, when many hardships were endured to help settle the country and drain the land for better farming.
Mr. Ross had always been a farmer and made a success at that occupation.
He passed away at his home after several weeks of illness, December 13, 1934, age 75 years, four months and 11 days.
He leaves to remember him, his wife, of Los Angeles, Calif.; George and John, Jr. of Rockwell City; Mason, Mrs. Clara Fowlie, and Helen of Lake City; Mary Ross of Los Angeles, and Oliver of Sioux City; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Wright of Mahomet, Ill.; thirteen grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, with the Rev. Roy B. Weaklend officiating. Burial was in Lake Creek cemetery.
