Sunday's Obituary - Melvin C. Reimann

This is the obituary of Melvin C. Reimann, my first cousin twice removed. He was the son of Conrad and Norma (Polsfuss) Reimann. Norma was the sister of my great grandmother, Alma (Polsfuss) Schauer. Melvin would have been a first cousin to my grandmother, and that's the "twice removed" part of the equation. He was the twin brother of Marvin Reimann, though I don't know if they were identical or fraternal twins. His parents and brother were buried at Roselawn Memorial Park in Monona, WI, but his tombstone is not in the immediate vicinity. He may not be buried at the same cemetery.Update:He was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Madison, Wisconsin, Section 8, Lot 161 according to cemetery records on find-a-grave.

This is from the February 15, 1999 edition of the Wisconsin State Journal.

Sunday's Obituary - Roy Fowlie was killed by lightning 100 years ago today

Royal James Fowlie (Roy) was my great grand uncle, and the brother of my great grandfather, Frank Brown Fowlie. According to my notes, Roy was born March 30, 1887 in Rockwell City, Calhoun County, Iowa to Alexander Brown Fowlie, of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and Mary Kiesel.of Kankakee County, Illinois. He was killed by lightning July 31, 1911 and was buried at Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa, August 2, 1911. He was never married. The 1910 census shows that he was living with two brothers, Alexander and Henry, and his mother on the family farm in Twin Lakes Township, Calhoun, Iowa.

This is from the Rockwell City Advocate, August 3, 1911.
Killed By Lightning
On Monday afternoon Roy Fowlie, a young man who was working for P. McGinty, southwest of town, was struck and instantly killed by lightning. At the tine of the sad occurrence he was handling grain bundles on a wagon on the Robert Moore farm where threshing was going on. The bolt seemed to strike him on the head and go through his body, burning his clothing almost entirely off. The team, owned by Mr. McGinty, became frightened and started to run but was caught and the burning grain thrown from the wagon. The shock was only slightly felt by the other men in the field. The young man was in his twenty-fifth year and was a steady hard working lad. The sympathy of the community goes out to the sorrowing parents, brothers and sisters in their sudden and awful bereavement. The funeral was held yesterday morning from the Catholic Church in this city and the body was followed to its last resting place in Rose Hill cemetery by a large concourse of sorrowing friends.

Norma was the sister of my great grandmother, Alma (Polsfuss) Schauer. He was known to my family as "uncle Con". Unfortunately, I don't have any photos scanned of Conrad Reimann.

This obituary is from the Wisconsin State Journal, February 19, 1986. I have added the items within brackets to clarify.

Sunday's Obituary - Norma T. Polsfuss Reimann

Today's obituary is from my mother's side of the family and down the line to the Polfuss surname. Norma T. (Polsfuss) Reimann (1904-1989) was my great grand aunt, the sister of my great grand mother Alma (Polsfuss) Schauer (1895-1977). They were the daughters of Gottlieb (~1860-1939) and Hulda (Schulke) Polsfuss (~1866-1946). Unfortunately, I have no photos of Norma scanned at the moment to post with this obituary.

This obituary is from the May 8, 1989 edition of the Wisconsin State Journal page 6A. I added the material in the brackets the clarify. There is also some question on the number of siblings, my notes have 8 children for Gottlieb and Hulda. She had 3 sisters and 4 brothers, but one brother died only a day old and a sister died around age 16 or 17, so they may have been omitted from the obituary by its author. I don't have dates of death for her oldest sister Ella (born 1888) and her youngest brother William Palfuss (born 1901). Her oldest sister Ella died in 1964, so according to my notes she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ella, Ida and Alma.
Reimann, Norma T.
MADISON — Norma T. Reimann, age 85, of 4806 Regent Street, Madison, died on Saturday, May 6, 1989, at her home. She was born on January 26, 1904, In Newton township, [Marquette County, Wisconsin] the daughter of Gottlieb and Hulda Polsfuss. She married Conrad Reimann on June 29, 1924, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Newton. He preceded her in death in 1986. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Madison for many years where she had been active in several of its organizations until the time of her death. Survivors include: Melvin (Carol Jean) Reimann of Madison; a daughter-in-law, Lois Reimann of Madison; and three grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by: her son, Marvin Reimann in 1984; three brothers; and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1201 [sic (should be 1021)] Spaight Street, at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 9, 1989. Reverend David Susan will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Friends may call from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Monday, May 8, 1989, at the GUNDERSON FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church.

The above obituary is from the Wisconsin State Journal, May 8, 1989. It was probably written by a member of the Reimann family and not the newspaper itself. I'm publishing it here for educational and genealogical purposes.

Updated to reflect that I found the year of death for Ella (Polsfuss) Muehrer.

Sunday's Obituary - John Hunt

John Hunt
The following is a typed obituary for my 2nd Great Grandfather, John Hunt. My copy is simply hand typed, with no indication of a source or publication date.

OBITUARY OF JOHN HUNT
John Hunt, 96, of Riverside, California, died Wednesday December 29, 1965. The funeral will be held at the Preston-Rasmussen Mortuary in Riverside.

Mr. Hunt was born October 3, 1869 in Johnson County, Iowa. He was married to Jennie Johnson in 1896 at Blair, Nebraska. They moved to Coleridge, Nebraska where they farmed and reared their family. He lost his beloved wife in 1914 and continued on farming until 1919 when he moved with his childeren [sic] to Fairfax, So. Dakota, where he had a Creamery and Produce business. He has lived with his son Theodore, in Riverside, California for the last twenty years.

He leaves to morn his loss a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Brassfield, of Portland, Oregon, a son, Theodore, of Hoquiam, Washington. Sixteen grandchildren, 36 Great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Ida Gilbert of West Covian, California.

Mr. Hunt took great pride in his grandchildren and their families. Up until he was 90 years old, he spent his time traveling across the county visiting each of them. His loss will be felt by the host of relatives and friends he has gained clear across the continent.

The fi[n]al service and burial will be in the Coleridge Cemetery at Coleridge, Nebraska.

I would add that my notes say he was born in Downey, Cedar County, Iowa, which is about a mile east of the Cedar County-Johnson County border. Perhaps the family lived in Johnson County, but he was born in Cedar? I'll have to dig a little deeper on that.

My notes also have John Hunt and the family living in Precinct 17, Cedar County, Nebraska January 1920 during the 1920 census, so the obituary may be inaccurate on the date for the move to Fairfax, SD.

There is another discrepancy in the obit, it says he lived in Riverside, California with his son Theodore Hunt, but also that Theodore Hunt was of Hoquiam, Washington.

I'm not certain of his middle name, I have "Elwood?" written in my notes. Is that right?

Sunday's Obituary - George A. Fowlie

This obituary is from the Rockwell City Advocate, Rockwell City, Calhoun County Iowa and is dated June 22, 1967.George A. Fowlie was the brother of Frank Fowlie, so he was my great grand uncle.

According to my notes, he was the 3rd child of Alex and Mary Fowlie and was born January 27, 1878. His obituary says he was buried at Rosehill Cemetery, but I forgot to look for his tombstone during the last trip. Guess I'll have to add that to the list for next time. My database has Alexander as his middle name, but another source suggests Arthur. I think it's probably Alexander for his father, but I'll keep my eyes open for further evidence.

George Fowlie Service Friday
Lake City - George A. Fowlie, 89, Lake City, former Rockwell City resident, died June 13, [1967] at McVay Memorial Hospital, Lake City, of infirmities of age. He had lived at Anderson Nursing Home, Lake City, for three years.

Son of Alex and Mary Keisel Fowlie, he was born January 27, 1879 [sic] at Blairstown [Benton County, Iowa]. He was never married. He had farmed for some years near Rockwell City, and was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include three brothers, Frank Fowlie, Lake View, Alex Fowlie, Winnebago, Minnesota, and Henry Fowlie, East St. Louis, Illinois, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Hull, Gowrie, and Mrs. Maggie Samsel, Bellflower, Calif.

Funeral services were Friday at Huffman Memorial Chapel, Lake City, with Reverend Timothy Hollinger, pastor of the Lake City Baptist church officiating.

Pallbearers were Oliver Ross, Donald Mapel, Walt Moberg, Carl Moberg, W.J. Pitstick, and John T. Lang. Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City.

One tidbit about McVay Memorial Hospital is that it was on the corner of Center and Jefferson and is now a condominium.

Sunday's Obituary - Joseph C. Fowlie

Tombstone of Joseph Fowlie
Tombstone of Joseph Fowlie, Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa
Joseph Charles Fowlie was my great grand uncle and was an older brother of Frank Brown Fowlie, my great grand father. According to my notes, Joseph was born October 5, 1879 in Garrison, Benton County, Iowa to Alexander Brown Fowlie, of Aberdeenshire, Scotland and Mary Kiesel, of Kankakee County, Illinois. He is listed as their 4th child. He died January 3, 1908 of pneumonia in Rockwell City, Calhoun, Iowa. He was buried at Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Calhoun, Iowa.

You are probably reading this thinking, "Hey, that tombstone says 1881, not 1879! What's up with that?" Well, the tombstone must be wrong. Family records indicate October 5, 1879. The 1880 Census of Jackson Township, Benton County, Iowa dated June 1, 1880 has Joseph listed as age 8/12, born in October [1879]. The 1900 census of Twin Lakes Township, Calhoun County, Iowa has Joseph listed as age 20, born October 1879. The tombstone photographed above, by me in March 2011, was directly in line with his parents and adjacent to the Fowlie monument, so it is for the "right" Joseph Fowlie. My only guess is that someone made an error in making the tombstone and the death notice. Perhaps the tombstone is a replacement or there was no stone to start with and the new stone was based upon the following death notice.

This death notice is from the Rockwell City Advocate, January 23, 1908.

Death of Joseph Fowlie
The community was shocked yesterday when the announcement was made on the streets that Joseph C. Fowlie had passed away after an illness of about ten days with pneumonia, his death occurring at the home of E.M. Reynolds. Deceased was born in Benton county [Iowa] and was aged 27 [sic] years, 3 months and 17 days. He came to Rockwell City with his parents when about five years old and has resided near here since that time. He leaves to mourn him four sisters and seven brothers. The funeral occurs this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church, deceased being a member of that organization.

Sunday's Obituary - Fannie Stotler

Sarah Francis (Fannie) Stevenson-Stotler, 1920

I found this obituary in an envelope in one of my Grandmother's boxes. It is the obituary for the 2nd(?) wife of my 3rd Great Grandfather, Hiram A. Stotler (1838-1920). I am a descendant of his first wife, Hannah Argo. Hannah died in March 1871 and Hiram married Sarah Francis Stevenson in December 1871. They later divorced. The article to follow is dated October 28, 1920 and probably from a newspaper in the Piatt County, Illinois area, though that part is missing from the article. The obituary omits details on their divorce, but Hiram had moved to Indianapolis by the 1900 census and he died in Rockwell City Iowa in June 1920. Fannie was listed widowed in 1900 and 1910 and divorced in 1920. They were probably divorced prior to 1900 and the census taker recorded widowed by mistake or misunderstanding. The 1900 census also lists 3 children, zero living.

FOUND DEAD IN CHICKEN PARK

Mrs. Fannie Stotler Found Dead Thursday Afternoon After Being Dead Several Hours

Word spread through the village on Thursday of last week that Mrs. Fannie Stotler, a familiar character about town was found dead in her chicken yard.

Mrs. Stotler lived alone for many years, and on the day of her death she was missed about the house by her neighbors, but they thought she was in town until in the afternoon when Mrs. Wells and Mrs. Skeels went to the house, but found her still absent and in a short time Mrs. Wells found her lifeless body in her chicken park where she had gone to feed her chickens. In a short time a large crowd had gathered and the lifeless body was removed to the undertaking parlors of Wm. House, where the body was prepared for burial.

Coroner W. J. Porter of Montecello came to Mansfield Saturday morning and empaneled the following jury, A. R. Ross, foreman, Chas. Slater clerk, Garret VanMeter, Robert Bateman, Sr., A. F. Smothers and Dr. Young, who returned a verdict of death from natural causes. (A.R. Ross may be a descendant of a sibling of my 3rd Great Grandfather Henry Ross)

OBITUARY

Sarah Francis Stevenson was born in Cable county W. Virginia, August 1, 1844 and died in Mansfield, October 28, 1920. She was left motherless when a few weeks old and was taken into the home of James Mathews, where she grew to womanhood. In 1852 she accompanied her foster mother to Fayette county, Ohio, and in 1885 [This must be a typo in the newspaper, probably 1855 or 1865] the moved to Illinois, December 28, 1871 she was married to Hiram Stotler. In 1880 they came to Mansfield where she has since resided.

She was converted in early life and united with the Methodist church and lived a constant christian life in her peculiar way, often saying it was the grace of her Lord that carried her thru.

Funeral services were held in the M E. church Sunday afternoon, conducted by the pastor Rev. J. E. Evans. In addition to the floral offerings of friends there was a large boquet [sic] of flowers plucked from the garden of the deceased. The body was laid to rest in the Mansfield cemetery.
